An Inland “Sea”. Nestled in the Salton Basin, the Salton Sea is actually not a sea, but a salty, inland lake. At 376 square miles, it covers an area larger than two other famous California lakes, Mono Lake and Lake Tahoe. The Salton Sea is the drainage point for the Imperial Valley’s irrigation system, and it’s also a resting point for migratory birds.

The Sea’s History. Geological evidence shows that the Salton Sea is not the first lake to have found its way to the Salton Basin. At least 1,300 years ago, a lake called Lake Cahuilla graced the area, most likely filled by the Colorado River. Scientists believe the lake has been filled many other times over a period of at least 10,000 years.
